Furman Men Picked To Win So-Con Title.
Defending league champion UNC Greensboro was picked second in the
eight-team poll after accumulating just one fewer point than Furman and
three first-place votes. Appalachian State was tabbed third with Elon
fourth and College of Charleston and Georgia Southern tying for the fifth
spot. Davidson and Wofford rounded out the preseason predictions at
seventh and eighth, respectively.
“It is great to be voted at the top by the other coaches, but its just the
preseason,” said coach Doug Allison. “There is a lot of work to be done
and we will have earn the position on the field.”
Furman also paced the league with four preseason All-SoCon selections.
Senior forward Shea Salinas, junior midfielder Patrick Murray, senior
defender Jon Leathers and senior goalkeeper Bryan Amos were named to the
13-member squad. All four Paladins, including 2006 SoCon
Player-of-the-Year Jon Leathers, were all-league selections a year ago.
Furman, which continues its preseason with a 7 p.m. match at South
Carolina on Friday, returns eight starters from last years 11-7-1 squad
that finished third in the SoCon with a 4-2-1 mark.
