January 22, 2008 by Ray Alley

Frierson Named Freshman Player of Week.

Freshman midfielder Katy Frierson (Homewood, AL) was named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week following her two-goal performance against South Carolina this past weekend, the conference office announced on Monday.

Frierson, who played high school soccer at Homewood HS outside of Birmingham, netted two goals on the weekend to bring her team-leading total up to eight on the season. She is also the team’s points leader, having collected 23 of them. All eight of Frierson’s goals have come in the last seven SEC games and three of those contests have been multi-goal games. She has also netted the game-winning goal in each of the last three Sunday contests for Auburn.

This is the first time Frierson has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week and the third conference award for an Auburn player this season, joining senior goalkeeper Allison Whitworth (Defensive Player of the Week – Aug. 25) and junior midfielder Rebecca Howell (Offensive Player of the Week – Sept. 29).

Auburn is currently 8-7-2, 4-3-1 SEC and tied with South Carolina for fifth in the conference standings. Auburn will play its final regular-season road contest on Thursday night at Georgia at 8pm ETin a game that will be shown live nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel.
