Indiana Upsets Tar Heels To Reach College Cup.
Chapel Hill, NC — Sixteen seeded Indiana pulled off its second consecutive upset to move on to the College Cup when the Hoosiers downed #9 seed UNC, 1-0, at Fetzer Field. The Hoosiers previously beat #1 seed Notre Dame to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Sophomore forward Eriq Zavaleta claimed the game winner in the 60th minute when he headed his own rebound past goalkeeper Scott Goodwin.
Indiana’s Patrick Doody sent a ball into the box where freshman defender Jonathan Campbell was battling Zavaleta for position. Goodwin charged toward the cross before putting on the brakes and retreating to the net.
Zavaleta connected on a header and Goodwin was in position to get a hand on the ball to keep it out of the net. The rebound went directly to Zavaleta who headed the ball past Goodwin and into the back of the net.
The goal would be all the Hoosiers would need on the night, despite the Tar Heels putting pressure on the IU backline most of the second half.
The Tar Heel defense held Indiana without a shot in the first half but the Hoosiers made up for it early in the second half with a flurry less than 10 minutes into the second session.
The setback is the first for the Tar Heels at Fetzer Field since Sept. 3, 2010, a string of 40 matches, snapping the second-longest streak in NCAA history.
Carolina finishes the season 16-4-3 on the year and fall short of the College Cup for the first time since the 2007 season.
