N.C. All-Stars Sweep Sandlappers

January 9, 2012 by Ray Alley

N.C. All-Stars Sweep Sandlappers.

Trey Hemphill Scores Game-winner

The North Carolina boys and girls pulled off a doubleheader sweep for the 2nd year in a row in the Clash of the Carolinas with the boys beating South Carolina 1-0 while the girls won 2-1.

Trey Hemphill scored the lone goal of the boys game in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick when South Carolina goalie Hunter Greer of Wando was called for taking a player down in the penalty area.

Greer had four saves on the day for the Sandlappers, but South Carolina couldn’t get anything past the duo of Holland Hammond and Jaron Bradley who combined for 7 saves for the Tar Heels.

North Carolina now holds a 2-1-3 advantage over South Carolina in the 6 year event.

On the ladies side, the Tar Heels continued their dominance of the Sandlappers in the Clash of the Carolinas with a 2-1 victory. They’ve now won this event 5 of 6 times.

The game was scoreless until the 2nd half when North Carolina put pressure on South Carolina goalie Emily Gossen of Academic Magnet and a rebound off one of her deflections was knocked into the goal by one of her own defensemen to give NC a 1-0 lead.

Gossen had four saves on the day, the most in the game, but was beaten a second time when Logan Vitale scored in the 78th minute to make it 2-0.

South Carolina would answer back 1 minute later as Natalie Lackey scored the Sandlappers only goal, but it wouldn’t be enough. South Carolina was outshot 13-7.
