AEG Up For Sale!.
One wonders if there would still be Major League Soccer had it not been for Philip Anschutz and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). One of the original MLS investors/owners, AEG helped keep the league afloat in the early years, owning six of the league’s 10 teams at one point.
It has been reported Anachutz is ready to sell AEG. The price tag could be the largest ever for a sports deal. More than the $2.15 billion the new owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers paid for that MLB franchise. But its sports division is only a small portion of AEG, whose empire includes AEG Live, its music entertainment division, and who owns or operates facilities in 19 of the 50 biggest U.S. markets.
Anschutz paid $26 million foir the Los Angeles Galaxy after its third season of operation. In time, AEG also had interests in the Colorado Rapids, Chicago Fire, D.C. United, MetroStars and Houston Dynamo.
