James Madison is the winner of the first Colonial Athletic Association game played this season with a 2-1 win over Hofstra. The Dukes moved to 3-2-3 overall.
Christian McLaughlin, a senior forward from Herndon, VA, scored the game’s only goal, penalty kick in the 42nd minute, in leading the Duke’s to a 1-0 upset of top-ranked and defending national champion North Carolina.
That earned McLaughlin the CAA’s Player of the Week award. Freshman Defender Bjarki Adalsteinsson was selected CAA Rookie of the Week.. Adalsteinsson organized the JMU defense from his center back position in the shutout of the Tar Heels and the win over Hofstra.
Old Dominion moved up to #4 in the College Soccer News national poll after improving to 6-0 with victories over Nationally ranked Creighton (2-1) and Drake (4-1) to win the Creighton Classic
William & Mary split two matches at the Creighton Classic, downing Drake 4-1, before falling to #2 Creighton 2-1 on Sunday. Junior Chris Perez scored a goal versus Drake and assisted on Patrick O’Brien’s goal in the 23rd minute against Creighton that put W&M on top 1-0.
The Tribe also got goals from Ben Anderson, Marcus Luster and Ryan Flesch in the Drake victory. Perez and Luster were chosen to the all-tournament team.
Georgia State shutout instate rival Georgia Southern 3-0 with William Mellors-Blair scoring the Panthers’ first two goals. UNC Wilmington freshman forward Colin Bonner came off the bench to score a pair of goals to tie the game against Binghamton, only to lose on a last-second goal.
George Mason is off to a 6-0 start for the first time since 1985 after defeating UMBC 2-1. The Patriots got both goals in the opening 30 minutes of the match. Sophomore Timi Mulgrew scored for the fourth time this season just 7:35 into the contest. Senior Taylor Morgan recorded the eventual game-winner in the 29th minute when he scored his fifth goal of the season.
