Georgia College Upsets National Ranked Saints.
The undefeated start to the 2012 season ended for North Georgia College and State University, with a 3-2 upset to the Georgia College Saints.
The victory was powered by the first hat trick for Georgia College soccer. Sophomore Ashley Veilleux (Monroe, GA) scored a pair of goals in the first half, and got the eventually goal-winner in the season.
North Georgia was ranked #5 nationally in the NSCAA’s NCAA Division II women’s poll, and came into the game with a 7-1 overall record. The Saints become the highest-ranked team ever beaten by the Bobcats, the Georgia College soccer history.
Veilleux got the scoring started after 12 minutes of back-and-forth action, taking a pass from junior Brittaney Borror (Evans, Ga.) and directing it to the bottom right corner of the net. Veilleux made it 2-0 from long range, scoring a 25-yarder in the 28th minute.
North Georgia’s first strike came 43 seconds into the second half, as Cicely Taliaferro stole an attempted clear and scored, setting up the equalizer.
Veilleux got the game-winner off a pass from senior Olivia Holden (Fishers, Ind.) with 14:45 left on the clock
Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) made 16 saves in the victory, tying the school record set by Michelle Parr in 2004, the inaugural year of GC soccer. Mallory Sayre made six stops for North Georgia in the loss.
Borror’s assist gives her eight in her career, tying her for eighth all-time with Kayla Emerson (2007-10) and Megan McAlpin (2008-10). Veilleux now has nine goals in her career, good for seventh, a tie with Tami Pissott (2004-05) and Jeni Day (2006-08).
