Moore Leads Tennessee with seven-point game
A lot of things have changed in Knoxville since last fall’s soccer season. The Lady Vols have a new coach, a #23 national ranking and they are playing well.
Brian Pensky’s team is off to a 7-2-2 start and coming off a 6-0 SEC win over Mississppi State. Sophoore Iyana Moore (Marietta, GA) had three of those goals, and assisted on two others.
“Certainly scoring 16 seconds into the game is a good thing,” said Pensky.
Hannah Wilkinson got that first goal. Moore’s hat trick was the first for UT since Sept. 26, 2011 when Alexis Owens had three against Florida.
The Lady Vols were coming off a 2-1 loss to the Gators. Their Southeastern Conference win was 2-1 in overtime against Alabama. Tennessee and Vanderbilt also played to a 1-1 draw.
“We didn’t get the win last game, so it was really important that we got the win today,” Moore said, referring to the loss to Florida in the rain, and how the team was prepared for MSU.
“I thought the team did everything to get the ball into the back of the net (against Mississippi State). And it wasn’t all me. All props go to the team.”
In the loss to Florida, the Lady Vols got a late second half goal from Wilkinson to tie the game at 1-1 and force overtime. Adrian Leon finished the Gators’ winning goal six minutes into OT.
