Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders
Are Strong Again In NAIA Soccer.
The average college soccer fan might not recognize all the names in the NAIA weekly national rankings, but if you know anything at all about NAIA soccer you are most likely to recognize Lindsey Wilson (Columbia, KY).
The Blue Raiders are ranked first in the men’s national poll, and the women are ranked #2, behind California Concordia.
Lindsey Wilson won the first of its nine NAIA men’s national championship in 1995. The last was last fall, a 3-2 victory over Hastings. The Blue Raiders also won national titles in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2009. The women’s team captured NAIA national titles in 2004 and 2006.
The National Association of Intercollegiate athletics was formed in 1940, primarily to organize smaller colleges and universities to compete for a basketball national championships. The NAIA began competition in men’s soccer in 1959 and in 1981 for women.
Since 1940, many NCAA schools, including Division I institutions, initially were members of the NAIA. At the start of the 2012 fall season,, the NAIA reported to have 258 member schools.
Although formed in the Midwest, the NAIA has had particular strength in the Southeast. Even today.
Auburn Montgomery is ranked #3 in the men’s national soccer poll, one spot ahead of Mississippi’s Belhaven College. Former national champion Bethel from Tennessee is #7, followed by Southern Poly from Georgia.
On the women’s side, Lee University from Tennessee, winners of the last four NAIA women’s national championships, is ranked #3, followed at #4 by Florida’s Embry-Riddle University. Tennessee’s two-time champion Martin Methodist is ranked #11.
Lee’s loss came against Embry-Riddle, but the Lady Flames rebounded the following weekend for a 3-2 OT win over Lindsey-Wilson. That result will be reflected in the next poll.
