Montoya Picks U17 Squad.
Montoya named the squad after a late-August training camp in California where the USA defenated the China U-17 WMT in two friendly matches by 2-1 and 5-1 scores.
All of the players are still in high school, except for forward Summer Green, who graduated earlier in order to enroll at North Carolina this fall. She has played in early season collegiae games for the Tar Heels. Green set a U.S. record for most goals scored in a CONCACAF qualifying tournament at any level when she had 12 in just five games to help the U.S. win the regional title in Guatemala and earn the trip to the World Cup.
The U.S. is 22-5-6 overall in 2010 and 2011 combined, including 13-1-4 in international games. Defensively, behind goalkeeper Jane Campbell (Georgia), they did not allow a goal in regional qualifying.
The U.S. opens the tournament against France on Set. 22, followed by a group game with Gambia on Sept. 25 and against Korea DPR on Sept. 29. The tourney includes 16 teams, including nine that return from World Cup 2010. Not included is defending champion Korea Republic.
