In her first game back with Wake Forest after winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Katie Stengel picked up right where she left off last year, scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at Miami and in the process tying the Demon Deacons’ career goal-scoring record. Playing in only the first game of her junior season, Stengel scored the 36th goal of her career, evening her with Jill Hutchinson (2006-09) atop the Wake Forest scoring charts. …..Coaches for the 2013 NCCA East-West All-Star soccer games have been named. Greensboro Grimsley’s Matt Martineau will coach the West boys team, while Tarboro’s Leshaun Jenkins will coach the East boys. The West girls coach will be Beth Luck from Asheboro HS and the East coach will be Deran Coe from Wake Forest-Rolesville…..Danny Williams, the German-American midfielder, who got the starting nod in the USA’s 1-0 World Cup qualifier win over Jamaica in Columbus, OH, has ties to North Carolina. His father, an American serviceman, is originally from North Carolina, and as a child Williams and his parents often visited relatives in the Tar Heel State……Guilford College freshman forward Chris Gillespie (Chapel Hill, NC) scored both goals in the Quakers 2-1 ODAC men’s soccer victory over Washington & Lee…..High Point University sophomore Mamadee Nyepon (Greensboro, NC) has been named the Big South Conference Attacking Player of the Week after scoring a pair of goals and adding an assists in the Panthers two victories, including a BSC 5-4 win over Longwood. The Panthers also beat UNC Greensboro, 2-0…..Three Triangle area N.C. high school girls have been named to the U.S. Under-17 National team that will open play in the 2012 FIFA Under-20 World Cup on Sept. 22 against France in Azerbaijan. Selected to the 21-player U.S. roster were Cardinal Gibbons junior Morgan Reid, Panther Creek senior Claire Wagner and Sanderson junior Joanna Boyles. All play club soccer for the CASL Chelsea team, which won the Elite Clubs National League nationals in July. Reid is committed to Duke, Wagner to Clemson and Boyles to UNC….Duke senior GK James Belshaw was selected Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week.
