The NASL Carolina RailHawks will be without former N.C, State defender Justin Willis, a Raleigh native, for the rest of the season after he suffered a torn ACL injury that will require knee surgery….Three new members will be added to the Wingate University Sports Hall of Fame during induction ceremonies on Saturday morning, Oct. 19. The Wingate Sports Hall of Fame class of 2013 includes baseball outfielder Frank Pait (North Wilkesboro, N.C., class of ’85), football running back Tracy Bowen (Travelers Rest, S.C., class of ’99) and soccer forward Ben Hill (Pensacola, Fla., class of ’03). Hill concluded his Wingate career by earning NSCAA/NCAA Division II All-American second team in 2002. He was the SAC Player of the Year following his junior and senior seasons, helping the Bulldogs win 28 matches during this time frame. Hill scored 56 goals with 17 assists during his career. He led the SAC in scoring as a senior (20 goals, four assists) and as a junior (20 goals, two assists)…..The Wilmington Hammerheads, which finished the USL PRO season in ninth place, missed making the playoffs by a single point. Cody Arnoux kept Wilmington Hammerheads playoff hopes alive when he scored in stoppage time to edge the Dayton Dutch Lions. It was the third consecutive win for the Hammerheads. However, Wilmington had a point deducted in July when Tom Parratt played in a match for which he had been suspended. He was held out of a game, thinking that counted for the one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation, but actually it was the next game, the one in which he played, that he was supposed to sit out…..UNC head coach Anson Dorrance has brought in another outstanding recruiting class. One player who can help the Tar Heels right away is Alexa Newfield, a transfer from the University of Georgia. Newfield missed most of 2012 with a knee injury, but had previously broken the school record with 40 points in one season. Two freshmen in the 13-player class, Emily Bruder and Amber Munerlyn, were members of the U.S. Under-17 national team that competed in the 2012 World Cup in Azerbaigan.
