Pia’s Last Day On The Job.
Pia Sundhage had three games to say her good-byes as U.S. WNT head coach after the team returned from London with Olympic gold medals. All three turned out to be wins, closing out her five-year record as the U.S. coach at 91-6-10. It began in an 8-0 rout of Costa Rica in Abby Wambach’s hometown of Rochester, NY, and ended back-to-back, 2-1 and 6-2, against Australia.
Alex Morgan and Shannon Boxx scored in leading the U.S. back from a 1-0 deficit in the first game with the Matildas. Morgan, Wambch, Boxx and Sydney Leroux scored in the second, getting three unanswered goals after Australia had taken a 2-1 first-half lead.
After her last game, Sundhage spoke about the emotions of returning to coach her native Sweden’s women’s national team and leaving the U.S. team, which she called “the best team in the world.”
