Carley Victor, a Texas native and former standout player at Southern Methodist University, has been named the new girls soccer coach at Riverside HS. She replaces Terry Archenhold, who stepped down after 17 seasons and 374 victories- the most ever for a girls soccer coach in South Carolina. Victor spent the past two seasons coaching her alma mater, Plano West High School, to back-to-back Class AAAAA state championships. Earlier this summer, she married Greenville High boys soccer coach Rob Victor, so she had planned to move to the area. Archenhold led Riverside to eight Upper State titles and seven state championships….University of South Carolina women’s head coach Shelley Smith, in her 13th season in Columbia (138-89-32), returns 20 letterwinners, including nine starters from the Gamecocks’ 2012 team. USC returns 84.5 percent of their scoring from last fall, including senior Danielle Au (Suwanee, Ga.), who led the Gamecocks in points (11) and goals (4). Goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo, a two-time All-SEC honoree and the 2011 SEC Freshman and Co-Defensive Player of the Year, will anchor the Gamecock defense for the third consecutive year. She hs a 0.99 goals allowed average in 38 career collegiate games. She was named the 2012 Canadian Under-20 Female Player of the Year…..Sean Okoli (Federal Way, WA) shocked the Furman Paladins with a goal just 40 seconds into the preseason match, and went on to score two more to give the Demon Deacons a 3-2 victory. Furman’s goals were by freshman Bobby Edet (Frisco, TX), and senior Michael Gandier (Hastings, Minn.)…..The College of Charleston begins play in the Colonial Athletic Association this fall after leaving the Southern Conference. Senior goalkeeper Kees Heemakerk (Zaandam, Netherlands) was named to the preseason All-CAA men’s soccer team…..For the ninth season, Francis Marion’s women will compete as an independent, but will fill in the Southern Conference schedules vacated by the departure of the CofC to the CAA.
