FC Kansas City goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart, 31, has been named the NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year, finishing ahead of Western New York’s Adrianna Franch and Portland’s Karina LeBlanc, who tied for second in the voting. Barnhart’s FC Kansas City teammate Becky Sauerbrunn was voted 2013 NWSL Defender of the Year. Sky Blue FC’s Christie Rampone finished second and Kansas City’s Leigh Ann Robinson was third. The NWSL Rookie of the Year. Kansas City’s Erika Tymrak was named the league’s Rookie of the Year….Not long after the NWSL season ended for the last-place Washington Spirit, goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris and defender Ali Krieger were on a plane to Sweden. Three days from the Spirit’s 1-1 draw with Sky Blue FC, they debuted for Tyreso of the Swedish Damallsvenskan in a 1-1 draw at KIF Orebro. U.S. WNT defender Whitney Engen and Amanda DaCosta started for Liverpool in a 4-3 win over Chelsea…..Charlie Davies has returned to New England where he grew up. After a year and a half in France and Denmark, where he worked to recover from injuries in an October, 2009 car crash, Davies has joined the New England Revolution on loan from Randers FC. Davies appeared in 25 games, including three starts, during that span of time in France and Denmark, but did not score a single goal. Davies played collegiate soccer at Boston College…..USA’s veteran right back Steve Cherundolo, once a lock for a spot in his fourth World Cup, will face his third knee surgery this year, which will sideline him indefinitely. Included was a save from point-blank range on a shot by Czech star Tomas Rosicky…..USA defender Omar Gonzalez has signed a seven-figure Designated Player contract to remain with the Los Angeles Galaxy at least four more years rather than seek options to leave MLS for Europe …..German-American John Anthony Brooks, who made his U.S. debut against Bosnia-Herzegovina, made his German Bundesliga first team debut the same week, scoring a goal for Herta Berlin in a 6-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt….National Soccer Hall of Fame inductions are set for Joe-Max Moore and Peter Vermes on Oct. 11 before the USA-Jamaica World Cup 2014 hexagonal at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. Moore appeared in 100 games for the U.S., including three World Cups. Vermes, who is the head coach of Sporting KC, will be inducted on the Veteran ballot. He scored 11 goals in 66 U.S. MNT games…..The New York Cosmos had a grand debut in the new North American Soccer League as they beat Fort Lauderdale, 2-1 before a sellout home crowd of 11,929 at Stuart Stadium on Long Island….Alejandro Bedoya, who had an outstanding performance in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup for the USA, has signed a three-year contract to play with recently promoted French club Nantes…….The Boston Breakers became the second NWSL team to can their coach when Lisa Cole and her assistant Maren Rojas were fired on Aug. 3. Cole was replaced by defender Cat Whitehill, as interim player/coach for the remainer of the season. The Washington Spirit fired coach Mike Jordan after a 1-2-3 start, and replaced him with Mark Parsons, who finished with a 2-12-5 mark over the final 19 games.
