Sixth-ranked North Carolina was upset 2-1 by the Maryland Terrapins in their ACC openers before a crowd of 1,500 fans at Ludwig Field in College Park, MD.
The win was the third in a row for Maryland over the Tar Heels. It is the first time UNC has ever lost three consecutive regular season games to the same ACC opponent.
A late first-half goal by junior Alex Reed gave the Terps a 1-0 halftime lead. It was the first goal allowed by UNC in 596 minutes, going back to a goal by Portland in the fifth minute of the season opener on August 17.
Maryland’s second goal came with 35:06 to play in the second half from Hayley Brock. UNC cut the lead to 2-1 with 12:21 left on Maria Lubrano’s penalty kick, but could not get the equalizer.
The game marked the 2012 debut of UNC’s Crystal Dunn, Kealia Ohai and Bryane Heaberlin, who recently returned from Japan after helping the U.S. U20 WNT win the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
