The Orlando City Lions of the USL PRO league took on three-time Serie A champion A.S. Roma in an exhibition at Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park, FL. The Italian powerhouse came away with a 5-0 win.
The game against A.S. Roma, which has held a winter training camp in Orlando, offered Orlando City an opportunity to take on world caliber professionals like USA’s Michael Bradley, Francesco Totti and Maarten Stekelenburg.
“It’s been a really good experience for everyone,” said Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath. “It’s a huge eye-opener to what the next level of soccer is for everyone on the team.”
Roma, coming off a winter training camp at Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney, was impressive against the 2012 USL PRO Regular Season champs. Roma took a 1-0 lead on a breakaway in the second minute of play with Manuel Lamela getting the goal.
Ten minutes later Lamela added a second for a 2-0 lead. By halftime it was 4-0. The fifth and final goal came in the 66th minute. By that time both teams had made multiple substitutions.
Bradley, the primary defensive midfielder for the United States Men’s National Team played the first half. Orlando City got a look at a number of young players who will be competing for a spot on the Lions roster for the 2013 season.
