54 Seniors Invited To 2013 adidas MLS Combine.
Major League Soccer invited 54 NCAA Division I seniors to take part in the 2013 adidas MLS Player Combine, January 11-15 in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
The combine takes place right before the 2013 MLS Superdraft, which will be held on Thursday, Jan. 17 in Indianapolis, IN, during the NSCAA Convention.
Included are two MAC Hermann Trophy finalists, Notre Dame’s Ryan Finley and Creighton’s Jose Gomez, along with 15 All-Americans and eight Men’s College Cup Final Four participants.
Finley, who is reported to have already signed a senior contract with MLS, came off the bench in every game throughout his senior season, leading the Irish with 21 goals, including six multiple-goal games. He earned the 2012 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year award.
Gomez was the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the year while leading the Bulejays to the Men’s College Cup semifinals.
The combine will also include invitees from D-II and D-III, as well as NAIA, all to be named in early January.
ACC players taking part in the combine include Boston College’s midfielders Kyle Bekkeer and Colin Murphy, along with Duke GK James Belshaw, UNC’s GK Scott Goodwin and MF Jordan Gafa, Virginia F Will Bates, and Wake Forest D Danny Wenzel.
Coastal Carolina’s Ashton Bennett, Elon’s Chris Thomas and ODU F Yannick Smith are expected to be among the top forward prospects at the combine.
Georgetown has three players in the combine, D Tommy Muller, MF Jimmy Neals, and MF Ian Christianson, while James Madison MF Paul Wyatt and Furman MF/F Coleton Henning were also invited.
Among the goalkeepers at the combine will be Marshall’s Daniel Withrow. Stetson MF Joanthan Mendoza will be joined by South Florida D Brenton Griffiths and MF Leston Paul.
Two Louisville Cardinals, D/MF Greg Cochrane and MF Paolo DelPiccolo will compete, along with Maryland MF John Stertzer and MF/D Taylor Kemp. It has been reported that Stertzer, like Finley, has already signed an MLS contract.
MF/F Donnie Smith will get his opportunity after an outstanding four-year career at Charlotte. West Virginia has two players, MF Uwem Etuk and D Eric Schoenle, on the combine roster.
Two others reported to have been signed to MLS senior contracts are UConn midfielder Carlos Alvarez and Notre Dame defender Dillon Powers.
