You can now put the Nike Swosh logo beside the United Soccer League. Following the sale of the Umbro Brand by NIKE, Inc, the sponsorship of the USL was transferred from Umbro to Nike.
“We are really excited to be developing the relationship between USL and NIKE, Inc. and look forward working with USL and member teams to elevate the game of soccer in the U.S,” commented Joe Elsmore, Nike’s Director of U.S. Soccer Sports Marketing Director.
The relationship between Umbro and the USL goes back two decades and at one time Umbro was a majorty owner (94%) of the USL. Umbro was bought by Nike in 2008. It was reported that Nike sold Umbro to U.S. clothing company Iconix Brand Group for $225 million in October.
