Will Play Scotland In Music City
The last time the U.S. Women’s National Team played in Nashville was in 2004. Since then, Music City has been a favorite stop for U.S. Soccer’s men’s teams.
The women are coming back next month when they take on Scotland on Feb. 13 at LP Field, home of the NFL Tennessee Titans.
It will be the second of two matches scheduled against Scotland, and the second with newly appointed WNT coach Tom Sermanni, a Scotsman himself, at the helm of the U.S. team.
It is expected, barring injuries, that all of the top U.S. players will be available for the game in Nashville.
The U.S. is ranked #1 in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings and coming off a 28-1-2 season in 2012, which included winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London.
The Americans will open 2013 on Feb. 9 against Scotland in Jacksonville, FL, and come into the new year undefeated in their past 23 games.
“When you consider the caliber of this women’s team — no losses in 23 straight matches and winning the gold medal — to have them come here and play in February will be fantastic,” Titans executive vice president Don MacLachlan said to a Tennessean reporter.
“We’ve had the men here on a regular basis over the years, but this will be the first time in a while for the women, so we’re really looking forward to bringing them in here.”
The U.S. women previously played three games in Tennessee. They played Sweden twice in 1997 in Chattanooga, and hosted Canada at L Field in July of 2004 just prior to the Olympics in Greece.
A crowd of almost 30,000 saw the U.S. MNT lose to Paraguay in Nashville in 2011, and LP Field hosted the U.S. U-23s for three CONCACAF Olympic qualifiers last year.
