Julie Johnson (Mesa, Ariz.) U.S. captain of the U.S. Under-20 World Cup champions, has been named the 2012 US Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year. A defender, she earned the Bronze Ball at the World Cup as the third best player in the tournament.
She started all six games in the World Cup, and played all but 38 minutes. She anchored a U.S. defense that allowed only one goal against three group stage winners in the knockout rounds, including a 1-0 championship win over Germany.
