Earlier this year there was speculation that Appalachian State University would leave the Southern Conference and join the College of Charleston in a move to the Colonial Athletic Association.
That isn’t going to happen, but reports out of Boone say that ASU will in fact leave the SoCon, and will accept an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference.
The move is driven by the ASU football program which seeks affiliation with the Football Bowl Subdivision. Since 1981, ASU has competed in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Yet unconfirmed is when the Mountaineers will be eligible to compete in the Sun Belt, but it could be as early as 2014. All 18 varsity sports will be affected.
The exit fee for schools leaving the conference with less than two years notice is $600,000.
Georgia Southern University has also been rumored to be moving to the Sun Belt Conference.
