Henry Zapata has joined the University of Georgia soccer staff as a volunteer coach and will work primarily with the goalkeepers. Zapata comes to Athens after serving as an assistant women’s soccer coach at the College of Charleston since the spring of 2011…..The Richmond Kickers recently signed former Georgia Perimeter defender Juan Arbelaez. After completing two seasons at Georgia Perimeter, Arbelaez transferred his junior season to VCU, where he made 38 appearances over two seasons. He was drafted in January by the Montreal Impact in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Prior to college, he scored 51 goals with 70 assists at West Hall HS in Oakwood, GA….Several Georgia teams produced great performances at the final weekend of the National League season, including the U16 Boys GSA 97 Phoenix Red and U18 Boys Concorde Fire Elite punching their tickets to the National Championships. Both GSA and Concorde Fire also produced runner-up honors as well. The U15 Boys GSA 98 Phoenix Red and U16 Boys Concorde Fire Elite took second place in their respective groups….Mercer head coach Brad Ruzzo has announced that sophomore midfielder Carl-Oscar Andersson has decided to leave the men’s soccer program to sign a professional contract with Falkenbergs FF. Andersson signed a two-year contract with Falkenbergs FF, who is a member of the Superettan, which is the second highest league in the Swedish football league system…..The Georgia State women’s soccer team has added Josh Villalobos, a graduate student at GSU majoring in exercise physiology, to coach Derek Leader’s staff., Villalobos, a member of the U-17 and U-18 U.S. men’s national teams, played at Furman, where he was a two-time All-SoCon selection…..Two players with Georgia ties, both veterans of the W-League, have signed to play this season with the Carolina Elite Cobras, based in Columbia, SC. Elizabeth Metherell played at the University of Georgia, while Rachel Baer, a native of Marietta, played at Kennesaw State. The Cobras also signed former College of Charleston standout Hannah Gmerek, who is a South Carolina native.
