The North Carolina men’s soccer program put a wrap on the 2012 season with its annual banquet on March 1. Sophomore defender Boyd Okwuonu (Edmond, OK) earned a pair of awards as he was named the Most Valuable Player and the Most Improved Player. Senior goalkeeper Scott Goodwin (Raleigh, NC) earned the Coaches Award, while redshirt sophomore David Walden (Richmond, VA) was named the “Tar Heel” Award winner. A new award called the Kirk Urso Heart Award given to the most competitive player went to senior Jordan Gafa (San Diego, CA)….ESPN has added former MLS midfielder Alejandro Moreno as an English language soccer analyst for Liga MX matches and Mexican National Team matches. Moreno, a Venezuelan international, played collegiate soccer at UNC Greensboro….Wake Forest erased a one-goal deficit on two different occasions en route to a 2-2 tie with the Carolina RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park to begin the 2013 spring schedule. The Demon Deacons were able to get goals from Sean Okoli and Andy Lubahn, while Jared Watts and Michael Gamble provided the assists. Former Demon Deacon Zack Schilawski scored the RailHawks’ goal to take a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game….Coming off a championship at the 2013 Algarve Cup in Portugal, U.S. WNT head coach Tom Sermanni named a 23-player roster that includes seven UNC Tar Heels for friendly matches against Germany and The Netherlands. Six of those Tar Heel players competed in the Algarve Cup – junior defender Crystal Dunn and alumnae Heather O’Reilly, Tobin Heath, Yael Averbuch, Ashlyn Harris and Whitney Engen. Meghan Klingenberg has returned to the National Team from injury. Dunn made her first WNT start against Iceland and Engen scored her first WNT goal against China……A pair of Charlotte players are making news in MLS. GK Clint Irwin, who played at Charlotte Christian, Elon and last season with the USL PRO’s Charlotte Eagles is in goal with the Colorado Rapids after starter Matt Pickens broke his arm. Former Charlotte 49ers and Charlotte Catholic HS MF Donnie Smith got his first start with New England.
