All of the five 2013 Florida State High School Athletic Association’s boys state championships were won by shutouts in regulation.
Cypress Bay (Weston) took the Class 5A title with a 1-0 win over West Orange (Winter Garden). Daniel Gutierrez scored the game’s only goal in the 26th minute off an assist from Breno Ertty. With the win, Cypress Bay finished the season with a 19-1-4 mark. West Orange was 19-2-4.
With the win, Cypress Bay became the fifth boys soccer team in Florida high school history to capture three consecutive state titles.
The 4-A championship was won by Gulf Coast (Naples) with a 2-0 victory over George Steinbrenner (Lutz). Clayton Curvin’s eighth-minute goal proved to be the game-winner. Rin Van made it 2-0 in the second half. Both Gulf Coast and GSHS finished the season 19-3-3.
The state championship was the first for Gulf Coast boys soccer and the first in Collier County history.
Ponte Vedra captured the 3A state title with a 2-0 win over American Heritage (Plantation). Both goals came in the second half from Michael Parado and Ben Fredericks.
Jacksonville Bolles got the 2A championship on a second-half goal by senior Suneel Madaliar to edge Gulliver Prep (Pinecrest), 1-0.
Gulliver went down to 10 players when junior midfielder Jesus Boliver received a first-half red card, forcing the Raiders to play a man short for the final 56 minutes of the match
Tampa Prep ended Hillel (North Miami Beach) hopes for its first state title by beating the Hustlers, 1-0 on a goal by Shaddy Douldar midway through the game’s second half. Tampa Prep finished unbeaten 23-0-3, while Hillel was 18-2-1.
Hillel’s boys soccer team because the first in any sport in the school’s history to reach a state championship game. The Terrapins won their second consecutive state title and fourth in the past five seasons.
