Phil Savitz will step down as boys high school soccer coach at Irmo HS after the 2013 season and will transfer to the new River Bluff HS. Savitz has guided Irmo to 13 state championships, the last in 2004. That is the longest stretch without a state title…..Spring Valley HS’ Dave Clark earned his 300th career coaching win when his Vikings beat Chapin on March 7, 2-1 on a shootout. Clark will coach in the Clash of the Carolinas all-star game at Daniel Island in July…..Two of the Palmetto State’s top scorers from a year ago will go head-to-head in Region 5-3A. Brookland-Cayce senior Herbert Cojulun scored 36 goals and led Class 3A in points with 81. Gilbert senior Jose Cedillo posted 41 goals as a junior, with 82 points to lead the Class 2A in scoring….The S.C. House has voted to approve an amended measure allowing the High School League to continue overseeing middle and high school sports in South Carolina. Legislators voted 105-1 to put into state law changes the league made to its own rules at its convention in Charleston in early March. It appears the 99-year-old league may have saved itself from extinction. The House bill requires another vote before heading to the Senate, which is also considering an elimination bill…..Former Furman men’s soccer standout Alec Kann has signed a contract to join Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire. Kann joins the Fire from USL-PRO side Charleston Battery where he spent the 2012 season. A four-year standout at Furman, Kann, a native of Decatur, Ga., compiled a 37-16-10 record, 18 shutouts and a 1.00 goals against average in 65 starts during his Paladin career……Former Clemson Tiger Stuart Holden returned to the field with Bolton in his first league appearance in almost two years on Feb. 26 in a 1-0 win over Peterborough in England’s second tier. He has struggled to return to action following a March 19, 2011 injury to his right knee on a nasty challenge by Manchester United’s Jonny Evans.
