Goal-Line Technology
FIFA has confirmed that goal-line technology (GLT) will be used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The world governing body for soccer has successfully deployed GLT at the 2012 Club World Cup in Japan, and will now roll it out during the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil, as well as the World Cup the following summer.
Initially, FIFA licensed two systems, called Hawk-Eye and Goalref, but is now inviting other technology providers to submit tenders as well. Hawkeye involves the use of cameras, while GoalRef is a technology using a low frequency magnetic field surrounding the goal and is linked to an electronic circuit in the ball, which in a fraction of a second transmits confirmation of a goal to a referee’s watch.
