In just over three months time, University of West Florida women’s soccer alum Monica Malavssi has helped lead her teams to two major championships.
[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’] While the midfielder helped the Argos win their first women’s Division II national championship last fall, in early March she led her country’s women’s basketball team to a gold medal at the 2013 Central America Games.
Mallavassi, a San Jose, Costa Rica native, reprsented her country and her hometown, which hosted the 2013 Cenral America Games. A former captain of the Costa Rica women’s soccer team, this time she led her country on the hardwood to a gold-medal finish.
“It was an amazing expeience,” Malvassi said. “To be able to get the chance to play in front of our country was incredible. We received so much support from everyone. This was the biggest sporting event in Costa Rica’s history and it was an honor to be part of it.”
Laura Chinchilla, the president of Costa Rica was there on the court to celebrate as Malvassi held the final possession as the game ended. Malvassi scored nine points in the 70-55 win over Honduras in the title game.
