The days of 24/7 soccer on FOX Soccer are about to come to an end.
Fox has announced that its Speed Channel will be rebranded as FOX Sports 1, and all of FOX Soccer’s broadcast rights packages, including UEFA Champions League and Europa League Games, will be carried by the new sports network.
That includes 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup tournaments, CONCACAF Champions League, the FA Cup, Gold Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup.
FOX Sports 1 will also broadcast NASCAR, college basketball, college football and UFC. The new network will launch on August 17, 2013.
Beginning this August, NBC Sports will be the rights holder to the Premier League on U.S. television. FOX Soccer lost those rights when a new contract was negotiated, which dealt a huge blow to the network. The Premier League had been its anchor programming.
FOX Soccer launched 17 years ago on Nov. 1, 1997 as FOX Sports World, televising an array of sports before settling on 24/7 coverage of soccer as FOX Soccer Channel in 2005 and morphing into FOX Soccer in 2011.
FOX Soccer carried Premier League matches since the 1998-99 season.
