The Tampa Bay Rowdies opened the 2013 season as the defending champions of the North American Soccer Leagtue.
[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’] After a season opening 0-0 draw against Carolina RailHawks, the Rowdies picked up their first win of the season on the road, defeating the San Antonio Scorpions, 2-0, and spoiling dedication night for the Scorpions’ new soccer specific stadium, Toyota Field.
The Scorpions outshot the Rowdies 13-4, but failed to finish opportunities. Tampa Bay finished two of its four chances.
Forward Amani Walker and defender Takuya Yamada made their second consecutive appearance on the NASL Team of the Week. Midfielder Raphael Cox earned his first NASL Player of the Week selection.
The win left the Rowdies tied with the Carolina RailHawks for first place in the NASL standings, each with four points.
Orlando Wins I-40 Derby
The Orlando City Lions of the USL PRO league won the inaugural preseason I-40 Derby with the Rowdies, 6-4 on aggregate.
Orlando swept the two-game home-and-home series, each time by a 3-2 margin. Dom Dwyer’s 90th minute goal was the difference for Orlando in the second meeting.
