Too Many Foreign Workers
There is a growing awareness in Europe that the top professional leagues have teams with increasingly high percentages of foreign players (foreign workers). Recent statistics from the International Center for Sports Studies (CIES) list the figures for foreigners as: England 55.1%, Italy 52.2%, Germany 46%, Spain 35.3%, and France 27.4%.
That results in a lower percentage of native players who have the opportunity to play at the highest professional level in their countries….thus limiting player development for their respective national teams.
UNC Invited To Big 10?
It had to happen sooner or later. The Sporting News has a story about the interest from the Big Ten Conference to lure the UNC Tar Heels away from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland makes the move for the 2014 season, and the report said that the Big Ten is also pursuing Virginia and Georgia Tech.
North Carolina has not commented publicly on the article, written by 247Sports.com’s Jeff Ermann. Far-fetched? Only as far-fetched as Notre Dame becoming a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
ASU, GSU Moving On
Appalachian State and Georgia Southern are leaving the Southern Conference and moving to the Sun Belt Conference. It is a move that qualifies their football programs for the Football Bowl Subdivision. The College of Charleston had previous announced its departure from the SoCon to the Colonial Athletic Association. Davidson College turned down an invitation to the CAA, but is now reported to be close to a move to the Atlantic 10, which recently added George Mason University from the CAA.
