University of Tennessee soccer signee Amalie Thestrup scored in three straight games to lead Denmark to wins over Scotland, Austria and Ukraine to advance to the second round of the 2013 UEFA European Women’s Under-19 Championship qualifying. The next round begins on August. 19…..Vanderbilt has signed five players for the fall of 2013, including Knoxville defender Laura Foster, who plays at Christian Academy of Knoxville and club soccer for Brentwood Premier. The others are Simone Charley (Hoover, Ala), Sasha Gray (Nesconset, NY), Krystina Iordanou (Brookville, NY) and Olivia Liebman (Austin, TX)…..For the second time this offseason, East Tennessee State freshman Sarah Zadrail was called up by the Austrian national team for an international friendly against Italy. Zadrazil, the Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, represented Austria last February against Belgium. In her international career, which began as a member of Austria’s U17 team, she has scored 13 goals……Christabel Oduro, University of Memphis junior forward, was a starter for Canada’s senior women’s national team during the Cyprus Cup in early March…..The 13th Annual Tommy Smith Banquet was held by the University of Memphis men’s soccer team. Head coach Richie Grant and MLS veterans Richard Mulroney, Ross Paule and Carey Tally spoke at the banquet, named in honor of the late Tommy Smith. A number of postseason awards were handed out with junior Dennis Kennetz Jr. being presented the 2012 Tommy Smith Spirit award. The banquet honors the memory of Smith, who played at Memphis from 1992-93. He passed away suddenly on March 18, 2000. Smith played in 77 games for UM, scoring 15 goals with 11 assists and 41 points in his collegiate career…Collierville’s Summer Sheppard, a defender/forward for Briarcrest Christian School, has signed to play collegiate soccer at Arkansas State University.
