With the score tied 1-1 at halftime, Collinsville exploded for three unanswered second-half goals to beat Westminster-Oak Mountain for the Alabama boys Class 1A-4A state title.
The girls Class 1A-4A championship went to Randolph with a 1-0 victory over two-time defending champs Montgomery Academy.
It was the first boys soccer state title for Collinsville, a Class 1A school in southeast Huntsville, which was ranked #9 in the state poll.
Moises Velasquez, Jorge Seguras, Edgar Padilla and Luis Segura scored the goals for the Panthers (14-7-7).
Collinsville survived a penalty kick shootout in the semifinals to knock off #4 Randolph 2-1. Goalkeeper Adan Morales, the MVP in the title game, stopped a penalty kick in regulation of the semifinal and another in the shootout.
Seventh-ranked Westminster-Oak Mountain (13-4-4) upset top-ranked UMS-Wright 2-0 in the semifinals.
Exciting Final Moments
The girls final was a heart-stopper as Randolph scored a second half goal from sophomore Abby Knowling, and survived a penalty kick with no time left in regulation for a 1-0 win over Montgomery Academy.
In the closing seconds Cari Budny broke free on goal and was fouled by Randolph goalkeeper Darla Zarzkea. Zarzkea was red-carded, and was replaced in goal by Knowling.
The penalty was given with time showing zeros, but the kick went over the goal to end the game.
Randolph’s Lauren Lackey was named the game’s MVP. Randolph got to the final with a 1-0 overtime win over Guntersville when Lauren Lowe deflected a ball off her knee into the goal.
The loss was the first of the season for Montgomery Academy (19-1-1), while Randolph finished 15-6-4.
