The Charleston Battery won a game against a Major League Soccer team that counts in the league standings.
That inter-league match between the USL PRO Battery, and the Houston Dynamo Reserves, moved Charleston back into second position in the league standing.
Jamacian Dane Kelly provided the game-winner in the 1-0 victory, volleying in the game’s only goal in the 35th minute of play.
That game is one of two inter-league matches that the Battery will play this season. Houston comes to Blackbaud Stadium for the return on June 8.
Charleston and the Dynamo have seen each other earlier this season, as the Battery edged Houston 2-1 in the final game of the 2013 preseason Carolina Challenge Cup.
The win in Houston followed a 1-0 USL PRO loss to the Charlotte Eagles, which snapped a five game winning streak for Charleston.
Shaun Francis struck a second-half free-kick goal for the only score in that game.
Prior to that loss the Battery extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-2 win over the Wilmington Hammerheads. Charleston went up 4-0 before the Hammers could get on the scoreboard.
The Battery broke out quickly against the Eagles. Kelly, who leads team scoring with four goals, took a pass from Nicki Peterson and finished the first goal in he second minute of play.
Will Host Earthquakes
The Battery defeated the Portland Timbers U23s 1-0 on a goal by rookie Austin Savage to push Charleston into the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Next up is a meeting with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer on Tuesday, May 28, at Blackbaud Stadium.
The Earthquakers are the current MLS Supporters Shield champs having won the regular season title in 2012.
