It was reported in The State that when Irmo senior Mattison Gossett stepped up to take what would be the deciding kick in the state 4-A championship shootout against the Lexington ?, he asked the referee, “Is this the winning kick?”
The referee replied, “That’s the rumor,” to which Gossett said, “I like that rumor.”
Following his normal routine, Gossett fired the kick toward the left corner of the goal. Lexington goalkeeper Jacob Parton blocked it.
Then it became a bit bazarre. The ball rebounded from Parton, and took a reverse spin. It rolled and rolled and finally trickled back across the goal line for the championship game-winner.
“I pointed at it and it rolled in,” said Gossett. “That’s the story. Destiny rolled that ball in.”
