South Gwinnett got the winning goal with two minutes left in regulation to upset Lassiter 2-1 in the first round of the Class AAAAAA Georgia high school state playoffs. Lassiter was unbeaten and ranked #1 in the state classification and nationally ranked in the NSCAA Spring Boys National High School poll. Austin Varney gave South Gwinnett its first goal three minutes into the game, while Derek Denton scored the game-winner. The Trojans, who had not allowed a goal in six games coming into the playoffs, got their goal from Trey Luscre in the first half…….Georgia Soccer will hold its Semi-Annual General Meeting on Saturday, July 20 at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel (Galleria). All Georgia Soccer member affiliates are required to have a representative at each business meeting….Georgia Soccer sent an ODP boys (combined age group) team to Lisbon, Portugal for nine days of training, observing and playing at Sporting Club Portugal. In many of the training sessions, the Georgia players were included by age group with their SCP counterparts in their team training sessions. During the week the Georgia team played a SCP team to a 1-1 draw, and defeated an older team from England, that was training for two weeks at SCP. Making the trip from the 96 age division were Andrew Kierath, Lukas Joyner and Kofi Twumasi and from the 97’s were Andre Deas, goalkeeper Hein Hter MacArthur, Chris Mikus and Yosef Samuel. From the 95’s were Justin Jun, Diego Manrique, Ernardo Manrique, Jerren “JJ” Nixon and JR Cozine. “The Young Guns” from the 99’s and 2000’s were Andrew Carleton, Jack Rittmeyer, Orelesi “Dapo” Oladapo and Carlos Pineda. Two players did not return directly to the U.S. as they continued their European soccer experience with extended training. Carlton is training with Manchester City, while Samuel traveled to Germany to train with Mainz, a German First Division team……The Atlanta Silverbacks Women opened their 2013 W-League season with a 3-0 win over the Charlotte Lady Eagles. After a scoreless first half, Atlanta got second-half goals from Cherie Sayon, Stacey Balaam and Savannah Jordan.
