The Carolina RailHawks opened the 2013 NASL season in the newly renovated WakeMed Soccer Park stadium, which has added 3,000 permanent seats, bringing seating capacity to near 10,000. Half of those went into the north end zone and the other half to upper-level stands on the east side of the stadium. The town of Cary funded the $6.3 million expansion project that also included a new three-story building on the east side to provide restrooms, concessions and access to the additional seating from the third level…..Charlotte Catholic senior Jane Cline scored four goals to lead her team to an 8-4 win over Weddington in the N.C. 3A quarterfinals of the NCHSAA state playoffs. Her four goals pushed her season total to 75, just two away from the Mecklenburg County and North Carolina record of 77 set by Davidson Day’s Bri Wills in 2011. Cline now has 181 goals in her career….Victoria Andreski, who plays at Wilkes Central HS and club soccer for the ’94 Carolina Fusion Elite, has been named a winner of the fifth annual US Youth Soccer Willam J. “Billy” Goaziou Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded on the basis of community service, giving back to the game of soccer and honors the memory of Goaziou for his outstanding services for soccer and US Youth Soccer. Andreski, who had 132 goals and 69 assists in her first three seasons at Wilkes Central, was the winner for girls, while Tyler Wischnefski (Sussex, Wis.) was the boys recipient…..The Wilmington Hammerheads may have only won twice this season in USL PRO play, but they have earned a shot at Major League Soccer with a second round 2-0 victory over the PDL Austin Aztex. Next up is a cross-country trip to Oregon for a May 29 meeting with the Portland Timbers of MLS at JELD-WEN Field. Richard Isberner scored the game-winner against Austin on a penalty kick goal. Aztex goalkeeper Devin Cook came off his line to stop Hammerheads forward Steven Perry on a breakaway, taking him down in the box in the 68th minute of play. That earned Cook a red card ejection and Austin played the rest of the game with only 10 players.
