Bobby Convey is the latest player to join the Montreal Impact via an acquisition from Sporting Kansas City. Convey will be reunited with TC president Kevin Payne and his old D.C. United teammate, TFC coach Ryan Nelsen. Convey lived with the Payne family after signing his first professional contract to play for D.C. United after leaving the U.S. Under-17 Residency Program in Bradenton, FL…Joe Goldberg recently passed away in Connecticut at the age of 85. He and Ian McDougall started the first soccer club on New York’s Long Island in 1962, Oceanside United Soccer Club. That club was formed four years before the Long Island Junior Soccer League was formed and was an anchor for that league. The LIJSL now has over ? registered players, more than the total membership of many state soccer associations…..On the day Sacha Kljestan received word of his callup to the U.S. MNT for games with Belgium and Germany and three World Cup qualifiers, he scored the first goal in Anderlecht’s 4-2 win at Lokeren that moved his team closer to clinching its second straight Belgian Jupiler League title. Kljestan was in the starting lineup for Anderlecht in its 1-1 tie with Zuite Waregem that clinched its second consecutive Belgian league championship…..Clint Dempsey’s Tottenhm defeated Sunderland 1-0, but missed out on the UEFA Champions League again next year with a fifth place finish in the English Premier League….The Rochester Rhinos, which have made postseason play in each of their 17 professional seasons, are off to 1-6-1 start in 2013 and have fired head coach Jesse Myer, replacing him with team president Pat Ercoli…..One for the record books! Seattle Reign FC’s Jennifer Ruiz picked up the first red card in National Women’s Soccer League history in a 3-0 loss to Sky Blue FC……Midfielder Tim Cahill struck the winning goal in the 91st minute of play to help the MLS Eastern Conference-leading New York Red Bulls to a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy before a sold out crowd of 25,219. The Red Bulls extended their unbeaten streak to six games…..Sir Alex Ferguson, 71, is retiring as the legendary coach of Manchester United where he coached the team in over 1,500 matches. He was denied a win in his last game at the helm, as Man U. played to a 5-5 draw with West Bromwich, but set a new record. It was the first 5-5 draw ever in the Premier League…..No one at Real Madrid seems to be unhappy with the departure of Jose Mourinho as coach when the season concludes and his three-year contract expires. The Portuguese native appears to be returning to Chelsea of the EPL, the club he left abruptly in the fall of 2007….U.S. Under-20 MNT coach Tab Ramos apparently is headed to the U20 FIFA World Cup this summer without John Anthony Brooks, the German American, who can’t decided whether he wants to play for the USA U20s or Germany’s U21s. He had a stellar professional season, leading Hertha Berlin to the 2. Bundesliga Liga championship. Seven of the 11 who played in Germany this past season hold dual citizenships with the U.S. and Germany. All seven grew up playing soccer in Germany……D.C. United defender Robbie Russell, 33, a former standout at Duke, has retired from professional soccer to pursue a medical degree. He will start a pre-med program at Georgetown University’s Medical School. Russell, born in Ghana, but grew up in Amherst, Mass., received a degree in sociology in 2000, and played in Iceland, Norway and Denmark before returning home to Major League Soccer in 2008 with Real Salt Lake, where his penalty kick goal in the 2009 MLS Cup final won his team the league championship. He was traded to D.C. United before the 2012 season…..U.S. Women’s National Team coach Tom Sermanni named six former UNC Tar Heels to his 21-player roster for an upcoming international friendly against Canada on June 2. Tar Heels taken were goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, defenders Crystal Dunn and Whitney Engen, midfielders Amber Brooks, Tobin Heath and Heather O’Reilly.
