Mary-Frances Monroe has been named the head coach of the University of Miami women’s soccer program.
She is the fourth head coach in program history, and replaces Tom Anagnost, who was fired after the 2012 season after two years with the Hurricanes.
She comes to Coral Gables from the University of Albany in the America East Conference. She played for the Boston Breakers of the WPSL Elite League as recently as the 2012 season.
Charged with building the Great Danes program from the ground up, Monroe and her coaching staff won 2009 America East Co-Coaching Staff of the Year honors in just her third year at the helm.
During that season, the Great Danes earned the first Division I postseason berth in program history.
Monroe was a four-year All-American at the University of Connecticut and UCLA.
The Hurricanes were 19-15-5 in the two seasons under Anagnost. His release had not been expected, and at the time Miami Director of Athletics Blake James said, “a variety of factors went into the decision.”
