Cumberland University has hired Kyle Smith as the new men’s head soccer coach. Smith previously served two seasons as a full-time men’s assistant at NCAA D-I Drake University…..Summer Lanter, a Soddy-Daisy HS standout who is headed to Lee University this fall, has been called into the next U.S. Under-20 WNT training camp in Portland, Ore, July 2-11 at the Nike Complex. Lanter is the Gatorade Tennessee High School Player of the Year. Australia won the deciding penalty kick shootout 4-2. Wilkinson had the assist on New Zealand’s game-tying goal….Chris Hennessey, an outstanding defender for the Lee University men’s soccer program (2006-09), has returned to the Flames’ athletic program as an assistant women’s coach for Coach Matt Yelton. Hennessey replaces Chris Walker, who accepted the women’s head coaching position at the University of North Alabama earlier this spring…..Tennessee Soccer will host the National Youth License Coaching course, a five-day long program, August 16-18 and August 24-25 at Drakes Creek Park in Henderson, TN. The course is geared towards coaches who work mainly with the U-6 through U-12 age groups as well as club DOCs. Candidates must attend all sessions. Online information and application forms are available at www.tnsoccer.org……A longstanding relationship between the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association and Baptist Sports Medicine came to an end at the 2013 Spring Fling. Baptist had provided certified athletic trainers for championship events over the more than 20-year partnership with TSSAA, whose board recently approved a partnership with Vanderbilt Sports Medicine…..Cumberland University assistant women’s coach Eric Susewind, 28, was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 24 West in Nashville. Susewind played soccer at Belmont University.
