Virginia native Lindsey Vanderspiegel has been named the new VCU women’s head soccer coach. She joins VCU after two seasons as the head coach at Georgia Southern where she guided the Eagles to their first Southern Conference Tournament title and NCAA appearance last fall. She replaces co-head coaches Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak and Tim Sahaydak, who accepted the head coaching position at the University of Central Florida. McLean’s boys U-17/18 and U-15/16 teams have competed in the DA’s Atlantic Division. Academy competition expands to include the U-14 beginning next season…..Virginia Commonwealth men’s head coach Dave Giffard has announced the addition of forwards Rahim Costa-Dorsey and Joel Teston to his recruiting list for the fall of 2013. Both played for the McLean Academy in Northern Virginia and they join a 12-member VCU recruiting class. Costa-Dorsey, a member of the German U-14 national pool before moving to the U.S. was a member of the Mount Vernon HS Virginia Class AAA championship team. A third McLean product, Greg Boehme, was announced earlier in the VCU freshman class…..VCU senior Wendy Acosta and sophomore Cristin Granados helped Costa Rican National team to a gold medal in the Central American Games earlier this spring. Acosta was the team’s leading scorer with 10 goals, and was named MVP of the tournament. Costa Rica went 5-0 and defeated Nicaragua 5-0 in the title game behind two goals from Acosta….Caroline Miller (Rockville, MD) has been honored as the University of Maryland’s top female athlete for the 2012-13 academic year. Miller, who ended her four-year collegiate career with a school-record eight-game goal-scoring streak as a senior, is currently playing professionally with the NWSL Washington Spirit.
