USA’s Fabian Johnson (R, #23) And Honduras’ Andy Najar (#19) Have Their Eyes On A Loose Ball In CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Action In Sandy, Utah. The U.S. Won The Game 1-0 On A Jozy Altidore Goal.
Three World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF Hexagonal, three wins and nine points!
That was the best-case sceneerio for the U.S. Men’s National Team, and that is what they got.[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]
The U.S. upped their point total to 13 points with win over Jamaica, Panama and Honduras. That put the U.S. in first place in the final round of regional qualifying.
Thirteen points is right on the edge of qualifying for one of three automatic spots from the region into the World Cup final.
The U.S. has four more qualifiers, Panama and Costa Rica on the road, and Jamaica and Mexico at home. One more win seals the deal. But, why not a sweep.
A lot of credit for the three-game win streak has been given to Jozy Altidore, who has broken out of a long scoreless streak, and scored in all three wins.
But it wasn’t a one-man effort, as U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann has gotten a solid team effort at both ends of the field. The U.S. has gone 4-0-1 since opening with a loss at Honduras, and has allowed only three goals in those five games, while scoring eight times.
The U.S. is two points clear of second-place Costa Rica, Mexico, which has only one victory and five draws in six matches, is in third place with eight points.
While the U.S. leads the competition in goals scored, Mexico has scored only three goals in six games. That includes a 0-0 draw with the United States in Mexico City.
