Jozy Altidore had the record for the largest transfer fee for an American professional soccer player when Villarreal paid $10 million five years ago when, as a teenager, he left the MLS New York Red Bulls to play in Spain. That amount was exceeded when Altidore recently moved to Sunderland of the English Premier League from Dutch Cup champion AZ for a transfer fee of $13 million.
Good profit for the Dutch, who received Altidore from Villarreal in a deal that has been estimated at about $1.9 million.
The previous American record for a transfer between between foreign clubs was $9.6 million, paid when Clint Dempsey moved from Fulham a year ago to Tottenham.
