Alabama midfielder Merel Van Dongen was one of 23 players named to the Netherlands National Women’s Soccer Team roster for the 2013 European Championships in Sweden. The Dutch were eliminated from advancing to the knockout phase of the tournament by Iceland. Van Dongen will be a sophomore for the Crimson Tide this fall…..Ali Sadler, a midfielder from Brentwood, Tenn. (Ravenwood HS), is the final commitment to the Birmingham Southern women’s soccer team for the fall of 2013….. All [show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]five members of Alabama’s freshman recruiting class were named to the First-Year Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. The five Crimson Tide frosh, Katie Bourgeois (Katy, TX), Abby Lutzenkirchen (Marietta, GA), Emily Rusk (Charlotte, NC), Kaylee Semeisberger (Akron, Ohio) and Merel Van Dongen (The Netherlands) were among the 87 UA student-athletes on the annual list…..Samford incoming freshman goalkeeper Katie Peters (Greenfield, Ind.) was included in the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team training camp, July 2-11, in Portland, Ore. She is the first player in Samford history to earn an invitation to the U.S. National Team training camp….University of South Alabama Jaguars .Jess Oram (Pace, FL), Clarissa Hernandez (Pensacola, FL) and Florida State transfer Rylee Hart (Pace, FL) played on the Gulf Coast Texans this summer that repeated as Women’s Premier Soccer League Southeastern Conference champions by defeating Alabama Futbol Club on penalties……Former University of North Alabama soccer standout Nikki Brown has been named a Gulf South Conference “Top Ten” award winner for the third consecutive year, becoming just the second student-athlete in GSC history to accomplish the feat. Fighting through injuries her entire senior season, Brown finished with 11 points behind two goals and seven assists. She was a four-year starter and appeared in 81 career matches…..University of Alabama in Huntsville’s new men’s head soccer coach Matt Watts will get a good look at his team by opening with three consecutive home games in September, starting with a Sept. 8 meeting with Lincoln Memorial, followed by Shorter and Montevallo.
