Rachel Cox’s final high school soccer game was an MVP performance. The Greensboro Grimsley grad had a hand, or rather a foot, in both goals as the West claimed a 2-2 draw with the East in the annual N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star girls soccer game at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro.

State University Wolfpack for preseason training, scored with under 19 minutes left in regulation to give the West a 2-1 lead. Her goal was assisted by East Forsyth’s Jackie Nieradka, who will play at Appalachian State.
Less than five minutes later the East got the equalizer on an unassisted goal by Fayetteville Jack Britt’s Nancy Kirk, who dribbled through the defense to slot home the goal for the final 2-2 deadlock.
The first goal for the West came on a penalty kick by Nieradka after Cox was fouled in the penalty box. Nieradka, who plays on Cox’s North Carolina Fusion club team, took the PK.
“I wanted Jackie to take the penalty kick, because we play on the same club team and she always makes them,” said Cox after the game.
That PK gave the West a short-lived 1-0 first-half lead. That went away 17 minutes later when Duke-bound Christina Gibbons tied the game. The Cardinal Gibbons graduate headed in the goal from about eight yards out off a long free kick from Raleigh Broughton’s Caroline Brown just before halftime.
Since the first girls game in 1992, the West leads the soccer All-Star Game series 9-6-7.
