N.C. East-West All-Star Games In Greensboro
In all-star games the Most Valuable Player award usually goes to players who score goals.
But when the award was given at the end of the boys N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro, it went to a goalkeeper. And deservedly so.[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]
Durham School of the Arts’ Owen Ryan volleyed in the game-winning goal in the 50th minute of play in the East’s 2-1 win over the West. But it was East goalkeeper Jared Miller who preserved the victory.
The Franklinton HS grad stood strong in the goal, even stopping a penalty kick midway through the second half.
Northwest Guilford’s Stephen Chapman was fouled in the penalty box and took the penalty kick for the West. He it a low shot to the right that looked like a sure goal, but Miller guessed correctly and turned the ball away.
A minute later he made an other spectacular save, and late in the game he stuffed a West breakaway.
“In the handshake, I said (to Miller), ‘if you’re not the MVP, I don’t know who is,'” said West head coach Matt Martineau of Greensboro Grimsley in the Greensboro News & Record account of the game. “He saved the game for them.”
The only goal Miller allowed came in the first half on an unassisted goal by Concord Robinson’s Jason Andrejchak in the 25th minute of the game.
East drew level seconds before halftime on a nice combination that led to its first goal. Wake Forest Heritage’s Gage Novaria dribbled through the West defense and laid a pass off to Raleigh Sanderson’s Connor Francis, who gave it back to Novaria for an easy finish to the far post.
Soccer began as an East-West sport in 1992. The East leads the series 10-8-4.
