A couple of former University of Tennessee Lady Vols are proving that there is life after college for women seeking a professional soccer career in Europe.
Emily Dowd is having an outstanding season in Sweden, and Amy Harrison is set to begin playing in Scotland. They were teammates for three seasons with the Lady Vols.
Dowd, a native of Gainsville, FL, has scored 17 goals this season with Tierps IF, and is the leading the SvFF’s Div 1 Norra Sveaand league in scoring at the season’s midway point.
Dowd’s final season in Knoxville was 2011 when she scored 12 goals with seven assists for 31 points over 22 games. Over her four-year career she scored 22 goals and 12 assists for 56 points over 82 matches.
Harrison, whose father is Scottish, recently signed to play for Rangers LFC, a Scottish Women’s Premier League team that is affiliated with Rangers FC.
She starred at midfield for Tennessee from 2009-12, playing in 83 matches with 79 starts.
She had an outstanding start to her senior season scoring four goals in the first two games, two each against Samford and Western Kentucky. For her contributions to those two victories, she was named to several national Player of the Week selections.
Prior to her Tennessee career, Harrison was a veteran of playing on the international stage. She was a member of the Canadian Under-17 team in 2007 and 2008, earning nine caps for Canada in international competition.
She had an impressive showing in the 2008 CONCACAF tournament and traveled with the U17 Canadian team to the 2008 FIFA U17 World Cup.
The Scottish Women’s Premier League runs from March through November.
Rangers LFC is currently 8-2-1 on the season and in third place in the 12-team league.
