Mike Getman begins his 22nd season as the men’s head coach of the Alabama Birmingham men’s soccer team.
He believes if you want to be one of the top teams in the country, you have to play the top teams in the country.
The Blazers 2013 schedule includes seven teams that played in the 2012 NCAA Division I playoffs, including defending national champion Indiana[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’].
UAB will host the Hoosiers on Sept. 6 in the first home games of the season.
Five of the Blazers’ 2013 opponents were ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 at the end of the last season. Indiana was #1, New Mexico #10, Tulsa #14, Charlotte #23 and VCU #25.
“Last year, we had the ninth most-difficult schedule in the country and this season will be even tougher,” Getman said. “We expect the challenges we will face all season to prepare us for postseason play.”
While the Blazers will be playing seven playoffs opponents from 2013, they are no strangers to NCAA tournament competition, having made six trips to the playoffs in the past 14 years.
UAB has eight home games, and opens on August 30 in the VCU Classic against the host VCU Rams.
The number of conference games increase to nine this year with the addition of Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Old Dominion and affiliate member New Mexico joining Conference USA.
Charlotte was the NSCAA runnerup in 2011.
The 16th annual UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic is set for Sept. 13 & 15, Charlotte, Memphis and East Tennessee will join the Blazers in that tournament.
