The final group game was tigher, a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica on a goal by reserve midfielder Brek Shea, minutes after he entered the game.
It was Donovan’s one-touch pass that put Shea in for the game-winner.
In the quarterfinals the U.S. exploded for three second-half goals to make a runaway over El Salvador, 5-1. Eddie Johnson headed in the third goal just 15 seconds after stepping on the field.
Donovan, who is working his way back into the senior squad after taking an extended sabitcal from soccer earlier this year, scored a goal against El Salvador, assisted on three others and had a hand in the fourth.
In four games he has ? goals and five assists, and has established new career goals in both categories with ? career goals and ? assists.
In the past when the U.S. put a roster together that did not include all of the top players, the result was often disjoined. Not the case with this team.
This team is playing with great chemistry between the players. Confidence and enthusiasm is soaring, The team is attacking and scoring goals.
In a word, they have been relentless.
