Lander Tops PBC Men

August 23, 2013 by Ray Alley

The Lander Bearcats sit on top of the men’s Peach Belt Conference preseason poll, but they sit on an unsteady perch.
Four different teams received first-place votes by league coaches, with Lander receiving five for first and a 72 point total[show_disconnected][show_to accesslevel=’Subscriber’]. Flagler and Young Harris tied for second with 68 points each. Flagler received one first-place vote and Young Harris received three.
Fourth place Montevallo received the other first-place vote.
Lander is the defending regular season champion, their seventh title in school history and second in the last three seasons. The Bearcats went 7-1-1 in league play.
Lander lost five seniors, but return all-conference selections Chris Hobbs to the midfield and Clement Dauchy up top.
Young Harris was ranked as high as #6 nationally in 2012, and the Mountain Lions return senior midfielder Niall McCabe, who led the PBC with 15 goals last year.
Flagler, which reached the third round of the Division II tournament last fall, returns eight starters and 18 letterwinners.
Montevallo won it’s second PBC tournament title in the past three seasons. The Falcons have a new head coach in Bruce Dietterle. They return goalkeeper Brendan Ledgway, the 2012 PBC Player of the Year.
